Waiver of cost audit, rules for industries not producing essential goods: CII

Thursday, January 31st, 2008
I read the Article “Waiver of cost audit, rules for industries not producing essential goods: CII” by Ganesh on 29-Jan-2008 and could not help pondering over the following point.

Maintenance of cost accounting records entails a huge cost for companies in terms of time and money since they are required to be maintained in very minute and detailed manner. Details of all components of cost have to be included even though it may be insignificant. It may, at times, not be possible to extract such minute details even through a sophisticated ERP system. Maintenance of cost records is difficult for companies that produce multiple commodities, as actual consumption records have to be maintained for power, fuel and utilities per unit of production for each type of product. Moreover, non-application of these Rules to traded imported goods put our local industry to an unfair cost disadvantage, by unnecessarily increasing its transaction costs.”

When I read this, I have ask a simple question, “Is there any company in the world that does not maintain Cost Accounting Records ?”. In Middle East, it is not legal to get the Accounts Audited, but still the companies do it. Moreover they have Cost Accounting Records in place for decision making.

There was far cry in 1980s when the Railway was computerised in India and similar in 1990 in Banking Sector when Nationalised Banks were to be computerised - Loss of Jobs etc. You will notice now the private banks in India increased their business by the IT initiative bringing the Nationalised Banks to their knees by wooing their customers with superior services they can provide via their IT infrastructure.

huge wave

I am not in favour of Tax Audit or middle men like CAs hired for dealing with government regulations by individuals and companies. They are a huge burden to the business in dealing and meeting up with Government regulations. In US, the companies have to comply with SOX and it is perculated in all American business across the world. Moreover the world is moving towards IFRS and segmental reporting which places increased responsibility on the business for comprehensive reporting. These inititatives were to contain the frauds that occured in large corporations like Enron, World.com etc. India should be proud that they have the Cost Audit Regulations in place from year 1959.

Management Accounting is required for the business (no one can argue). When MNCs operate, they implement the best information system in the world and their internal reporting is more focussed in Management Accounts rather than Financial Accounts.

The conclusion from report by Ganesh indicates that some companies wants to avoid Cost Audit with a excuse that it is too expensive to maintain. Internally, if you ask, these companies Financial Controllers, they will tell you how many they spend Excel to provide the same information to their management.

The only difference at the end of the day when the companies avoid investing in an ERP system with proper management accounting is whether they are going to survive in the long run. As Napolean said, “War is 90% information.”

Knock, Knock - Opportunity

Monday, January 28th, 2008

Knock, Knock. Who’s there? Oppurtunity!! Can’t be. Why Not? Bcoz Opportunity knocks only once.

I had a good laugh when I watched this video.

The lady tells, “If you type google into the google, you can break the internet.”

Type google into google and you will notice the results on the right hand corner 1800 million hits. This indicates that the word google is on 1800 million websites.

Now try search your name on google. E.g “Santosh Puthran” and check whether you are visible on any websites. If there too many people with your name, the try “Your Name ” Cost Accountant. Check the results and determine whether the results help you professionally.

So if you do not find yourself on google search, then it is time to be active on the web to promote yourself professionally:

  1. Create your profile on www.linkedin.com and connect with your colleagues and ex-colleagues who will help you to recommended.
  2. Participate in discussions of your accounting body both virtually (yahoogroups or discussion board) and physically in seminars / meetings. This will help to promote your presence.
  3. Social Networking sites like www.digg.com , www.stumbleupon.com and www.indianpad.com are very good. Find good topics for discussions and share it in the professional community.
  4. Start Blogging on what you specialise. Blogger and Wordpress are one of the best sites. Or if you are a practising firm, please maintain an up-to-date website.

The best things in the world are free on the internet. So why not use them to promote professionally.

When will cycle rickshaw stop in India

Friday, January 25th, 2008
I read somewhere

“Too many choices, too little time,
Who’s gonna change the system.
If I don’t do it, someone else will.
Time is money, both add up!
Business is civilized warfare!
Go for the kill! After all we are capitalists!
The end justifies the means.”

I stumbledupon on the video, “Only in India” and was relating the passage above.

I worked in one of the top IT companies and was based in Noida. The city is well known for reputed IT companies.

When you look at Noida roads, you will see all soughts of vehicles plying on the road. I was appalled to see Cycle Rickshaw on the roads given the fact Noida is IT hub and not a remote village in UP.

The question that came to my mind, “How will you eliminate Cycle Rickshaw from Noida ?” The solution very simple…. but difficult to implement. What is alternate employment opportunities for Cycle Rickshaw puller and who will fund them ? Any thoughts …. how to find a solution ? please share them….

Another thing I noticed in Noida one foot high footpath along the road. So when you cross the zebra crossing, you have to climb the footpath !!!

The funniest was ” Yahaan per Thanda beer milta hai” - You get cold beer here.

Now Company Secretaries want to be known as "Chartered"

Tuesday, January 22nd, 2008

Recent interview of Preeti Malhotra, President, Institute of Company Secretaries of India (ICSI) in Business Standard.

To the question “Why are you seeking a name change of the institute?”

In the changing international context, our members are destined to play a much larger role in public practice as well as in service.

The executive council of the institute decided that to reflect the ICSI’s changing agenda and image, it should change its name to “The Institute of Chartered Secretaries of India”.

This will also eliminate the dichotomy between its brand name “chartered secretary” propagated through its corporate journal and its formal name The Institute of Company Secretaries of India.

I wonder changing the name by affixing the word “Chartered” would enhance the brand image, then India has around 50 specialised institutions who should not be discriminated. See GOI directory for list of specialised institutions. Presently there is only one institute formed under Act of Parliament of Republic of India that has the word “Chartered” in its name. And now there is another chasing for it.

I would like to know, how IIMs and IITs react to the name change. Whether they will also like to be known with the word “Chartered”.

I feel ICWAI has the right approach pursuing the name change to “Indian Institute of Cost & Management Accountants”.

StarOffice 8 is available free on Google Pack

Sunday, January 20th, 2008

It is a pleasant surprise to see that StarOffice Version 8 is available free on Google Pack. The product retails for $ 69.95. The product is a viable alternative to Microsoft Office which is very expensive to buy unless you are a student.

The other option is to download Open Office which is also a productivity suite available free. Both the productivity suite is supported by Sun Microsystem and is available free.

The download size is 144 mb. If you have broadband connection, then you can download them. Otherwise check out whether it is available in CD in some computer magazine.

If you are using a pirated software, please support the use StarOffice or Open Office Applications.

Free Laptop with AOL Broadband

Saturday, January 19th, 2008

Has the world started rotating the other way round “Free Laptop with AOL Broadband at Carphone Warehouse” !!! or Free Laptop when you subscribe for mobile phone contract.

I did not believe when these offers came the first time.

The mobile phone offer reads:

Our best offer yet! Connect selected mobile phones to selected monthly contracts this month and get a free laptop!

That’s right a Free Dell Inspiron 1520 laptop is yours on many £35 a month tariffs this winter when you connect to an 18 month contract. There are no catches or small print, we’ll simply send out your free laptop as soon as we’ve confirmed you’ve paid your first month’s mobile bill.

The laptop retails at £ 380 to £ 489. And the total commitment on mobile phone contract is £ 630. So you can guess where the margins come from when the buying is wholesale.

The other product that amazes me is Gillette Shaving Razor. Every year they add extra blade on the razor and the product sells. Currently it has 5 blades - Retails at £ 21.99 and cartridges of 8 at £ 14.99. In year 2010, it may have 10 blades. Will you consider them expensive or cheap ?

With the change in technology, the rules of the business change. Tata’s recently came up with Nano, a cheapest car on the planet !!! Now the role of management accountants in the industry has become more wider than ever.

In my SAP implementations, Financial Controllers have been more interested in Management Accounting Reports viz. Contribution/Margin reports, product group/ product wise. They want sliced and diced reports region-wise/customer group wise. The driver to these reports are the business managers who want it for decision making. SAP is encouraging the use of Business Intelligence for reporting.

The world is also spinning the other way round in Accounting. As the rules of business are changing, so is the role of management accountants and management accounting.

Top audit firms push to use their own judgment

Thursday, January 17th, 2008

Auditors and corporate finance departments must be able to use professional judgment without being second-guessed if countries continue to adopt principle-based accounting standards, the chief executives of the top six global accounting networks argued in a white paper on Tuesday.

The paper, presented at a Global Public Policy Symposium in New York, urged regulators and other stakeholders to create a system where reasonable auditor judgments are accepted.

“Investors are best served when financial reports are clear and easy to understand and use,” the CEOs of Deloitte Touche Tohmatsu [DLTE.UL], Ernst & Young [ERNY.UL], PricewaterhouseCoopers [PWC.UL], KPMG [KPMG.UL], Grant Thornton, and BDO Seidman wrote.

Networking and how to use Social Networking sites

Sunday, January 13th, 2008

I have been stumbling upon good sites for the benefit of the readers of Management Accountant Blog. I happened to meet Mr. Murthy from Rajahmundry, AP. I liked the websites he had stumbledupon and submitted reviews on a couple of posts and so I spoke to him.

To my surprise, he volunteered to help me and provide me with a couple of tips for my blog. We chatted on messenger for more than 2 hours and his tips were very helpful. I hope this helps you too.

  1. Layout of the Blog should be simple. Fonts matter!!! Accountants like reading small fonts (may be because we are interested in details and numbers.)
  2. Create and promote your profile on http://www.linkedin.com/ , http://www.spock.com/ and http://www.stumbledupon.com/ The profiles will help you network with right people and build up your network. Professional networking sites like linkedin help you immensely.
  3. Search Optimisation Tips: Use search optimization to drive internet traffic to your website. Read more

His advice was very helpful and you must have noticed the change on my blog. Currently I am working my profile on http://www.spock.com/Santosh-Puthran-jKkU14H and sending invites to people who are in my address book.

Spock is a very powerful internet tool. Even if you have not created your profile on spock, it will recognise you from bio pages, social networks, news sites, blogs or directories. Take for e.g. Bill Gates, Ratan Tata, Tony Blair, Hillary Clinton, Barack Obama or Manmohan Singh.

Spock lets you determine where people can find you on the internet. When you sign up for Spock you can claim your search results and shape what information people see. Plus, when there is new information about you on the internet, Spock sends you an alert so you are always up to date. Signing up is free and easy - just click here.

How do I claim a search result?

To claim a search result on Spock, click “Claim Your Search Result” on the page. When you have successfully claimed your search result on Spock, it will be merged with your current search result, and will be tied to your Spock account.

I was pleasantly surprised when I saw my profile on Spock and I claimed it.

As a professional, how should I use professional networking tools?

  1. Linkedin and Spock will help you build up your professional network. Companies are reluctant to spend on advertising for any vacancies or professional work. Virtual networking will help you to progress in your career by connecting to the right people. Spock will help you link all your profiles and websites together. This will help people know you and your work.
  2. Plaxo : http://www.plaxo.com/ is a contact address management tool which is integrated with Outlook and Linkedin. You update your info, your friends update theirs, and everyone stays in touch! You should sync your mobile phone with Outlook to have your contacts handy. You never know when opportunities strike.
  3. StumbleUpon: Use stumbleupon to review good sites on the internet. You will always find people to subscribe to your feeds on stumbleupon if you are stumbling on good sites. Search your name on http://www.google.com/ and see the results. This will give an indication whether you are known on the internet. Then check whether you are linked to the professional network.
  4. Google Reader: I have found www.google.com/reader very useful to keep myself updated when I subscribe to feeds of good websites. You will always notice the word “RSS” or “Atom” on a website. Click it and subscribe to the updates from the website.
  5. Blog: I would always recommend you have your own blog to share professional updates or participate by commenting on websites or blogs. This will help people in your profession to know about you. The accountants who are in practise should always have their website and should blog or comment on important updates in business or taxation. This will help them to be known in business circles in the industry.

Tata’s New Car - $ 2600 or Rs 100,000

Saturday, January 12th, 2008

It is a pleasant surprise to read the Independent newspaper “Can the world afford this car?” British Press has given this car fair amount of publicity both on press and TV.

There was mixed reviews. The Tata’s hailing it to be a peoples car whereas the greenpeace supporters were concerned about pollution in over congested Indian roads. The positive aspect is that it force the Government of India to speed up the infrastructure projects.

Tata Motors are going global on their own brand they are targetting the markets in Latin America, SouthEast Asia and Africa for Tata Nano range. Currently Tata’s are in negotiations and is a top contender to buy Land Rover and Jaguar, UK.

Link to video debate

I am very happy that India companies (non - IT) are growing globally.

There is incident that I wish to tell. I was part of SAP 4.6c implementation in Tata Motors. I remember how much the senior management were focussed on product costing and management accounting reports. During the implemetation, there was a issue about Bulk Materials (Bulk materials are used in small quantities of low value, so these items are not taken into account when costing an order.) Production Planning were happy to treat small items as bulk however Management Accountants were of the opinion that management is interested to know each and every component in making of car or chassis. The issue was later resolved.

Tata Motors actively promotes and helps employees in finance and cosing department to pursue ICWAI qualifications. If you are employee of Tata’s, please check your HR policies. During my working in Tata Motors SAP implementation, I had seen many cost accountants at every level of company.

Tatas are known in UK for

Tata’s. Keep it up.
