You should remain calm and relaxed on the SAP Certification Examination. The examination will be computer based and will consist of singe as well as multiple choice questions. I had finished my answers in first one and hour of the examination but stayed there to check my answers again. I revised lot of my answers particularly the multiple choice ones. So it is a good idea to stay in the examination hall for allotted hours. The moment your time is up, you get the results.

The key to pass SAP certification is to read the SAP training documentation, try out the exercises and revise. You will pass the certifications. Good Luck.

The answer to the question

Q. When entering a document using a foreign currency, which date is used to determine the exchange rate if the translation date is not entered ?

Activity Based Management - How to Collect Information

Wednesday, June 11th, 2008

This is a Guest Post by Rajendra Patil, Pune, India

Profile: View Rajendra Patil's profile on LinkedIn A technocrat with 17 years of proven success in ERP Implementation, Business Analysis, Consultancy Assignments in Strategic Cost Management, Profitability Analytics, Performance Management and Business Process Management in conjunction with the enterprise wide BI solutions. Currently working as an independent consultant in the area of Performance Management and Profitability.

This is a reply to the earlier post on ““. Rajendra answers few questions:

Q. How would a management accountant gather information and set rules for cost allocation ?

A. There are various techniques experts have created to collect the information starting from interviewing people, surveys, story-boarding to auto data transfer from the back-end processing business applications. The rules are defined in the paper model that is created for the organization. This paper model depends on the objectives that the organization has decided for the assignment. This model is different for different objective like profitability, cost improvement, resource planning etc. Sometimes the main model remains the same but multiple small models can be created for specific business pains. The logic for flowing the costs depends on the objective and the model.

Q. If the company has the good information system (ERP), then setting the rules are important. Then it would be an overnight job to run to allocate the costs based on set rules. Otherwise ABC will be labour-intensive with Management Accountants spending lot of time gathering the information rather than analysis them.

A. Yes if the organization has a good OLTP then collecting the data from the system is comparatively easier. Now we have various ETL tools to get the data. Some of the ABM solutions have created their own adapter for the ERPs like SAP or Oracle etc. Even if the organizations has any ERP, there is some part of the data that is still not available in those systems like the time spent on various activities or the no.of visits to a prospect (if CRM is also not present). This data has to come from various persons in the organization. Hence, the success of this assignment lies in the participation of the key personnel from various departments.

Technically this kind of data can be collected via web-based survey systems. The organization has to spend some time in the initial model creation and data collection systems, once that is done then the frequency of data collection is once in a quarter. So the people get ample time to analyze the data.

There are implementation methodologies like ‘Rapid Prototype’, where a first model which is very raw can be build in as less as two days. Then this model is expanded as required by the organization in those areas only. In the modeling the definition of the driver (the logic with which the cost flows) should be as accurate as possible. The corresponding data may not be accurate to start with. The accuracy of the data can be improved, but only when it is required. One should not wait for the accuracy for the data to the last minute or Re etc. This is used take business decisions and 80% accuracy in primary data is also good enough.

Now-a-days this collection of data and processing of it is being outsourced and various KPO organizations are eying that business.

Q. Or is ABC feasible for a company ?

A. Yes, it is feasible for all the organizations, which have multiple products, customers, channels, locations etc. These type of multiple options create the overheads in the organization which ABC puts using cause-and-effect logic. It would be easier if one takes professional help in the initial implementation as well as using commercial software for the same. It helps the internal team on understanding how to analyze the data. The calculation of the numbers is better left to the software application.

I hope these answers will help you to understand the practical solutions for the implementation as well to create new questions in your mind. Do let me know and I will try to answer them.

If you have any questions on Activity Based Management and its implementation, you may post your comments on this blog post or write to Rajendra Patil on rajendra@appsconsulting.in on specific issues or concerns.

Nestle SAP Implementation Year 2000

Sunday, May 18th, 2008
The article on SAP implementation in Nestle is one of the interesting case study. You may also be involved in ERP implementation in your company - as a consultant or an a user - you will hear this murmur,

“SAP implementation is very difficult in our company. The present software is the best.”
“Our company has lot of politics. I don’t think any other company has it. So will people agree on business process.”
“Some division may reckon, SAP does not fulfil all the business processes. We can produce any report from our legacy system”
“Some will say, we don’t have time to discuss or participate in the training. They will always say we don’t understand or training is inadequate.”

What ever the size of the company USD 100 million or multi-billion dollar - you will find two sets of people. One who think they can and other who cannot !!!

Nestle case is very good example, how much time they took to implement the solution and the lessons learned. Read more on www.cio.com

Problems encountered in Nestle. (Jeri Dunn, vice president and CIO of NestlŽ USA head of implementation)

  • Angry employees, costly re-engineering and long periods when it seemed the project would never end?
  • “When you move to SAP, you are changing the way people work,” Dunn says. “You are challenging their principles, their beliefs and the way they have done things for many, many years.
  • Power base at the division or company levels across the region. So each one had their own ideas to it their way.
  • We had nine different general ledgers and 28 points of customer entry. We had multiple purchasing systems. We had no clue how much volume we were doing with a particular vendor because every factory set up their own vendor masters and purchased on their own.
  • Even before three of the SAP and the Manugistics modules were rolled out in late 1999, there was rebellion in the ranks. Much of the employee resistance could be traced to a mistake that dated back to the project’s inception: None of the groups that were going to be directly affected by the new processes and systems were represented on the key stakeholders team.
  • Nobody wanted to learn the new way of doing things. Morale tumbled. Turnover among the employees who forecast demand for NestlŽ products reached 77 percent; the planners simply were loath or unable to abandon their familiar spreadsheets for the complex models of Manugistics.

Lessons learned from implementation

If Dunn were to do it over again, she’d focus first on changing business processes and achieving universal buy-in, and then and only then on installing the software. “If you try to do it with a system first, you will have an installation, not an implementation,” she says. “And there is a big difference between installing software and implementing a solution.”

If you are a SAP or Oracle consultant, share your experiences on the project and how did you overcome resistance to change.

The Forrester Wave™: SAP Implementation Providers, Q4 2007

Wednesday, February 20th, 2008
Forrester evaluated the leading 16 SAP implementation providers across 108 criteria and found that Accenture and IBM have established leadership positions in this market thanks to the breadth, depth, maturity, and global nature of their SAP implementation practices.

BearingPoint, Capgemini, CSC, Deloitte, Infosys, Satyam, and Wipro also make it into the Leaders category due to their fine SAP implementation capabilities. TCS comes in just on the cusp of the Leaders category as their practice continues to flourish and they increase their focus on implementation projects. Cognizant and HCL are smack in the middle of the Strong Performers category, both having newer, slightly smaller, but extremely credible implementation practices.

Neoris and Softtek, two providers that both use Latin America as their primary low-cost delivery location, are newer to the SAP arena and smaller, yet also make it into the Strong Performer category due to their robust and growing SAP capabilities.

Intelligroup, also a Strong Performer, though quite small, is the only real SAP specialist provider in this group. Finally, Fujitsu, the low scorer in the Strong Performer category, has excellent SAP skills that are primarily attributed to its recent acquisition of specialist SAP provider Rapidigm. To find the best SAP services partner, Forrester clients should customize the Forrester Wave™ tool to reflect their individual needs and preferences.

SAP Training Centres

Saturday, February 9th, 2008
There are asked in Yahoo Answers:
  1. Which Institute is best for SAP FICO training ?
  2. Are there SAP Training centres in the city ?
You will find in your city SAP training centres who will be conducting the training courses in a fraction of cost in comparison to the authorised training partners of SAP. However I would recommended you to get training from authorised training provider and get a certification from SAP.

The other route is to join a company that is implementing SAP and get a role as key user from the business side. This will help you get an exposure in SAP.

Before the rain

If you are planning to make a career as a SAP Consultant then find out the training providers on SAP Education.

That’s the investment you can make to become a true SAP Consultant and career in consulting.

SAP or Oracle Financials… which one should I do

      Saturday, June 16th, 2007

I sometimes receive an email from members regarding whether to do SAP or not.

What is your advice for SAP FICO. Should I go for it ?
Which are good training institutes to avail the courses ?
What are the job prospects ?
Which one is good SAP or Oracle Financials ?
The first answer you have to explore yourself where you want to take your career ? Do you want to be a ERP Consultant for few years and then move on Accounting or continue to be in IT industry. Then other questions can be answered

      SAP or Oracle

Both ERP solutions are dominant today in the marketplace. However SAP is number one in ERP application. I am SAP Certified Consultant and also trained on Oracle Financials. If you ask me, I will always recommend you to go for SAP since the customer base for SAP is more than Oracle and the opportunities are more. You need to check on salary of SAP & Oracle consultant since once you get into one of the ERP, you don’t look for the other.

      SAP Training

There are two way route for certification. The first you get your training from some small institute and work in SAP Consulting or End user company for an year and then go for certification. This will be cheaper. The other is join a SAP academy and take up the training course and enrol for certification. This is very expensive. In the first case, you will have to put more efforts to get a job into SAP but with training academy connections, your job path will be easier. Please contact SAP Education in the country where you reside for training and certifications. In either case, it pays off.

      Job Prospects

The job prospects are very good for people who know SAP. There is a overall shortage of SAP FICO Consultants. However entry level, you may find difficultly in getting into but with experience you will be able to get anywhere. If you want to work in consulting companies, then they would prefer project implementation experience over support. Secondly you should be open to travel. Generally a full life cycle project will stretch from 9 months to 2 years, so be prepared to spend most of your time away from your family or take your family with you. High salaries come with a price.

The other option is to work with a end user company. The salary level will be less with little or no travel.

      Salaries and Rates

Salary is pretty good, if you are in right consultancy. Permanent employment offers stability. You may also consider contracting. Rates are very good. The downside is the assignment will range from 2 weeks to 3 months. If you don’t get new assignments, then you should know what to do with idle time.

How will know which companies to approach

Watch out for newspapers which SAP consultancy has got the project. Then approach them directly. Register with the job sites and receive the alerts for SAP. You will find loads of email notification coming into your mail box.

      Any more questions, please comment.

      Cheers,
